“The Northeast blackout of 2003 severely affected the United States and the province of Ontario on Thursday, August 14, 2003. More than 50 million people were affected in Ontario as well as in Northeastern and Midwestern United States. In Toronto, 5,600,000 million people were impacted. The major blackout left the city without power for 12 hours. Every year since, on August 14, Torontonians organize a big party at sunset to commemorate this unique and rallying event.”
